| If
this is your first visit to Key West, make OId Town
your destination. Try to stay in Old Town if possible.
That way you are never far from your lodging, and are
probably able to stumble back there without any hassle.
You will find the many World Famous Duval Street Bars
and Pubs in Old Town. Many of them are haunted. Most
of Key West is
haunted.
You
can fly directly in to Key West and get a cab. Be sure
to get his or her cell number in case you need a ride
later! A car is usually not needed if you intend to
hang around Old Town. Plus parking can get expensive
even at the parking garage.
Driving
to Key West. Some first time visitors to the
Keys fly to Fort Lauderdale or Miami, rent a car one
way and drive. And then fly home from Key West. I recommend
driving at least once. Heading South on Route 1, the
Ocean (OS) will be on your left, the Gulf (GS) on your
right.
Alabama
Jack's is a MUST STOP for Conch Fritters, Conch
Salad, and other delicious menu items! The best Conch
Fritters I ever had. 58000 Cardsound Road, Key Largo,
Florida 33037. On the water.
Driving
south on Route 1, the 18 miles long "loop"
Cardsound Road will be on your left, around MM 126 OS.
Route 905, you can't miss it.
If
you think you are on Cardsound Road but may be in the
middle of nowhere, surrounded by water, that is it.
The
18 mile loop starts at Route 1 and ends at Route 1 further
south.
Great
place to chill out. Jimmy Buffett loved the place, it
was on his Top Ten List. The list is in a newpaper story
about Jimmy hanging on the wall over by the bathrooms.
When you leave Jack's to get back on 1 South there is
a toll bridge ($1.50) that spans what the locals call
Crocodile Lake. But the Crocodile Lake on the map you
drive by, no bridge.
The
only area of Florida with crocodiles instead of alligators.Ask
your bartender or server about it.
Expect
to see some Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers
at Alabama Jacks, who patrol the canals and lakes for
smuggling and other crimes.
There
are some other very cool places to stop along the way.
Most are located by the MM (Mile
Marker). The Mile Markers also let you know how far
you are from Key West! You must stop by Alabama Jack's!
Some such places are:
- Caribbean
Club - Famous for the Bacall/ Bogart 1948 movie
Key Largo. MM 104 GS
- Snappers
MM 94.5 OS,
- Hog
Heaven (go out back) MM 85.3 OS,
- Wahoo's
(go upstairs)MM 84 OS 83413 Overseas Hwy,
- Lorelei
MM 82 GS look for the topless mermaid, (has the
best sunsets),
- Robbie's
MM 78 GS 77522 Overseas Highway -
may be a little hard to find, take it slow. (very
cool place where you can feed the tarpon and is pet
friendly)
Remember,
these are stops after you visit Alabama
Jack's.
| Did
you know? There
was a "Count" in Key West and his lover
was deceased. |
The
book pictured is The
Florida Keys, A History and Guide. It has a separate
chapter for Key West. By best selling author Joy Williams.
10th Edition. You can Learn
More Here. I recommend it very highly, and give it
5 Stars. Well researched and I love her writing style!
If you are able, read it before you visit the Keys and
Key West. Joy
will give you the unbelievable truth and real facts
about the "Count", in the style of writing
that only she can do. That alone is worth the cost of
the book. Creepy story.
Or you can
take a look at His
Lost Diary. Written by Count Von Cosel himself.
His thoughts and his secrets.
Without
Joy Williams' book, I would have never known about Alabama
Jack's - where you will find the best Conch Fritters
in the world. Of all places, in downtown Card Sound,
which is in the middle of nowhere.
There is so much history in Joy's book I had a hard
time putting it down. It is that good.
